原名北京体育科学研究所，是中华人民共和国体育运动委员会直属的科研单位，1958年成立。国家体委体育科学研究所是中国第一个多学科综合性的体育科研机构，它的任务是促进体育科学事业的繁荣昌盛，为增强人民体质，攀登世界运动技术高峰服务。它研究提高运动水平的课题和体育科学中的基础理论，同时研究群众体育中某些方面的问题。
目前该所共有工作人员220人，其中研究人员110人，技术人员 46人。 设有 6个研究室，它们是：运动训练、球类训练、运动生理、运动医学、群众体育和情报资料研究室。此外，还有电影录相摄制室和科研仪器研制维修组。该所共有图书1.5万余册，国外报刊200余种。国家体委体育科学研究所的研究论文在两次全国体育科学报告会上都占有相当的比重（1964年占会上报告的 109篇的 1/4；1980年占会上入选论文280篇的1/7）。1978年体育系统在全国科学大会上获得的12项重大科研项目奖中，半数以上为国家体委体育科学研究所的研究成果。
