借助于实验研究动物的行为。在实验行为学中，常常使用模型。模型是指对任何起刺激作用的现实物体的模仿，这种模仿可以从很精确到很不精确的范围内变动，以便对诱发动物行为的刺激成分进行分析，弄清到底是什么刺激成分对诱发行为起了作用。例如利用模型研究雏银鸥乞食反应的实例：雏银鸥每当饥饿时便用喙啄击成鸥黄色喙上的红斑点，此时成鸥便会反吐食物给雏鸥。到底是什么外界刺激诱发了雏鸥的乞食的反应呢？为了回答这个问题，可使用模仿成鸥头部形状和颜色的各种硬纸卡模型做实验，这些模型变换成鸥喙及头部的着色和喙上斑点的颜色，并作各种可能的组合。实验结果表明：诱发雏鸥乞食反应的信息是在成鸥的喙上而与成鸥头部的形状、大小和颜色无关，喙上红斑点与喙底色的对比程度起着最重要的作用。用录音磁带播放声音和人工释放某种气味，也可看作是声音模型和气味模型。在研究鸟类的叫声时，常用改变歌声组分的自然顺序、节律或增减某种声音频率的方法，来测试到底是歌声中的什么成分具有重要的行为学意义。总之，行为学家可以任意改变刺激物的各个部分，以便能够确定其中最有效的刺激成分。
