麻风的病原菌。抗酸染色阳性，一般呈短小棒状或稍弯曲，长约 2～6μm，宽约0.2～0.6μm，无鞭毛、芽胞或荚膜，有时菌体着色不均，可呈串珠、颗粒或亚铃状。麻风杆菌的人工培养至今尚未成功，麻风病动物模型的复制也十分困难，现有小鼠足垫接种和犰狳接种模型。人类是麻风杆菌的唯一宿主，也是唯一传染源。
