所谓太阳视运动，即由于地球的自转运动，使得地球上的人总是觉得太阳每天都是东升西落．事实上，这当然不是由于太阳围绕地球运动了，而是一种＂视运动＂，也可以说是一种相对运动．地球自转方向是自西向东，所以看起来太阳就是东升西落了．
事实上，如果细心一点，你就会察觉，其实每一天，日出的方向都有变化，并不是象有些人认为的，太阳每天都从正东方升起，从正西方落下．这种感觉是错的．太阳的视运动轨迹因时因地而异，以北京（４０ｎ，１１６ｅ）为例，每年的３月２１日（春分）和９月２３（秋分）当日的太阳是从正东方升起，十二个小时后再从正西方落下．但，３月２１日以后至９月２３日前，每天的日出方位是东北方，日落方位是西北，正午太阳位于正南方天空，此时地表物体影子朝正北．９月２３日以后至次年的３月２１日，日出方位是东南方向，日落方位是西南方向，正午太阳仍然位于正南方天空．因此也产生了昼夜长短的变化．
