是一类大分子蛋白质，分子量约13000～25000不等，是1957年伊萨克斯和林登曼在研究病毒与宿主细胞的相互作用中发现的。当病毒侵入宿主细胞后，宿主细胞由于受到侵害而制造出来的抵抗病毒的一类蛋白质物质。它不同于一般产生的抗体蛋白：抗体蛋白是对侵入的病毒具有种属专一性的，对其它类病毒则无效，而宿主细胞产生的干扰素则不是专一对抗入侵病毒的，它一旦产生则除入侵病毒外对其他病毒的代谢也有干扰对抗作用，能起到保护宿主细胞防御其它多种病毒的侵染。由于干扰素的产生对宿主细胞是“内源性”的，因而对其自身是无毒性的，也是非抗原性的，为做为广谱抗病毒“药物”使用的可能性提供了安全保证。为抗病毒病提出了一个新途径，引起了广泛的重视。但干扰素具有宿主特异性，动物干扰素不能用于人体，使应用受到了限制，目前人体白细胞干扰素的结构已经弄清楚了，并已进行着人工合成的研究，同时用基因工程靠发酵法制造人白细胞干扰素已取得一定成果，不久的将来可望用于病毒病及肿瘤的治疗。
