Demospongiae

   多孔动物门中最大的一纲。骨骼为硅质和海绵质,硅质骨针中没有6辐骨针,但有大小之分。海绵质骨骼常与硅质骨针同时存在。本纲种类占海绵种类的一半以上。分布于潮间带、浅海到深达5000米的海底;还有一类生活在淡水中。寻常海绵的水沟系都属于复沟型,海绵体没有中央腔。
   莱维将该纲分为3个亚纲 :四放海绵亚纲、角质海绵亚纲和同骨海绵亚纲。
   海绵科各种类的骨骼为纯海绵质构造,质地柔软,长期被用于吸水、洗擦等。主要分布于热带和亚热带浅海。
