为菊科植物陀螺紫菀的根。植物形态详"单头紫苑"条。
【采集】
夏、秋采收。
【性味】
微苦，凉。
【功用主治】
清热解毒。
【选方】
①治急性乳腺炎:单头紫菀根一至一两半，或全草一至三两。水、酒各半煎服；亦可加威灵仙三钱同煎服。 ②治急性扁桃体炎:单头紫菀根三株。洗净，剪碎，加烧酒炖服，小儿可用米泔水炖服。 ③治小儿疳积，消化不良:单头紫菀根二至五钱，红枣三至五个。水煎服。(性味以下出《浙江民间常用草药》)
【临床应用】
预防感冒 取单头紫菀根制成煎剂，成人每次服20～40毫升(含生药3～6钱)，每10天服药1次，连服5次。试用于1018人，经对照观察，发病率较对照组明显降低。且服药组的患病者，临床症状较轻，病愈时间亦较短。
