单卵双胎发生的原因不清楚，但胚胎早期畸形较多，故在自然流产中很多。常见的畸形为：①骶尾部畸胎瘤；②人鱼体畸形秩序征和类似的程度较轻的问题，包括VATER联合症；③共泄腔外翻形序列征；④全脑畸形序列征；⑤无脑儿。两胎儿只有5%～20%的畸形是一致的，多数是不一致的。
