以脚为主支配球的一项球类运动。球用皮制，内装橡皮胆，圆周68～71厘米，重396～453克。球场长90～120米、宽45～90米，两端中央有球门。两队对抗，每队十一人，分别担任前锋、前卫、后卫、守门员。在互相攻守中运用传球、接球、抢截、运球、射门等技术和战术，将球射入对方球门而得分。比赛90分钟，分上下两半时，以得分多者为胜。
