《阅微草堂笔记》为清朝短篇志怪小说，於清朝乾隆五十四年(1789年)、至嘉庆三年(1798年)年间翰林院庶吉士出身的纪昀以笔记型式所编写成的。在时间上，主要搜辑当时代前後的各种狐鬼神仙、因果报应、劝善惩恶等之流传的乡野怪谭，或则亲身所听闻的奇情轶事；在空间地域上，范围则遍及全中国远至乌鲁木齐、伊宁，南至滇黔等地。
内文记述若真若假，似乎只在藉由这些志怪的描写而来折射出当时官场腐朽昏暗堕落之百态，进而反对宋儒的空谈性理疏於实践之理气哲学，并且讽刺道学家的虚伪矫作卑鄙，与旁敲侧击的揭露社会人心贪婪枉法及保守迷信。不过对处於社会下层的广大人民悲惨境遇的生活，纪昀在笔调中也表达出深刻的同情与悲悯。在每则故事结尾处作者总是会来那么几句短语，以衡平的语气来评断其故事来龙去脉理事曲直之所在或其有否通情达理之处地，此些评後语却也总是耐人寻味。
全集分五书，共二十四卷，1208则，约40万字。书一《滦阳消夏录》六卷(卷一至卷六)、书二《如是我闻》四卷(卷七至卷十)、书三《槐西杂志》四卷(卷十一至卷十四)、书四《姑妄听之》四卷(卷十五至卷十八) 、书五《滦阳续录》六卷(卷十九至卷二十四)。
