海军中部署在沿海重要地段，以火力参加沿岸防御作战的兵种。由海岸炮兵部队和海岸导弹部队组成。通常编有独立团、营。有的国家设有岸防司令部。装备大、中口径的海岸炮和不同射程的岸舰导弹武器系统。主要任务是保卫基地、港口和沿海重要地段，消灭敌方舰船，封锁海峡、航道，掩护近岸海区的交通线和舰船，支援海岸、岛屿守备部队作战。早在公元前，有些濒海国家已有岸防设施和兵力。14～15世纪，岸防兵随着配备岸防火炮的濒海要塞的出现而开始形成。18世纪以后，许多国家先后将岸防兵列入海军系统。中国于宋、元时期已在沿海建城设防，防御海盗。明、清以及中华民国时期在沿海要地修炮台,建要塞,配置部队，防御海上入侵。中华人民共和国成立后，中国人民解放军海军于1950年建立岸防兵，初期只有海岸炮兵部队，60年代组建了海岸导弹部队。
