国内分布于台湾、广东、海南岛、西沙群岛;国外分布在印度和太平洋、斯里兰卡、菲律宾、日本。
中型个体，贝壳卵圆形、壳质薄而坚实，壳高约90毫米宽约61毫米。螺旋部短，呈锥形，螺层约为7 1/2层，体螺层膨大，具12-14条明显纵肋，在肩角部形成尖状突起。贝壳表面肉色，非常光滑，并具有较规则的白色和棕褐色花纹。壳口近半圆形·肉面青白色。无厣。
尚方沿海常见种，多生活在低潮线以下的细沙质海底，可以钻入100毫米以下的细沙内生活，不易采到活的个体，在海边常可采到由风浪吹打上来的贝壳。
肉可食用，贝壳美丽可做工艺美术品，由于其贝壳上的花纹很像四川出产的蜀锦，故又称蜀江螺。
