英国现有6所兽医学院的领导和管理机构。总部设在伦敦。根据1844年英国皇家大宪章建立。主要任务是决定英国的兽医教育方针和维护兽医的职业行为。曾直接管辖伦敦、利物浦、剑桥、布里斯托尔、爱丁堡和格拉斯哥兽医学院。1948年这些兽医学院成为当地大学的正式学院后,与当地大学共同行使领导职能,负责主持各兽医学院毕业生的国家考试和颁发英国特有的兽医学位──英国皇家兽医学院成员（相当于欧美其他国家的兽医学博士）称号。领导机构由院长、副院长、秘书兼注册主任和理事会组成，理事会由学院成员组成，下设若干业务委员会和分会。还设有纪律委员会，负责检查和监督其成员的职业行为。皇家兽医学院还对成员中有特殊成就者授予特别成员称号。
