地球是椭球形的。在测量学中，过去由于受到技术条件的限制，不能勘测整个地球椭球的大小，只能用个别国家和局部地区的大地测量资料推求椭球体的元素（长轴半径、扁率等）。这些根据地方数据推算得出的椭球有局限性，只能作为地球形状和大小的参考，故称为参考椭球。
