仙人掌科植物。原产美国亚利桑那州等地。本种以挺拔高大著称，其垂直的主干高达15米。重达数吨，能活200年。茎干具有极强的储水能力。一场大雨过后，一株巨大的巨人柱能吸收大约1吨水。
