与常规电机主体类似，在这里，若静止的励磁线圈和旋转电枢都是超导的，称全超导电机；若静止励磁线圈为超导体，但旋转电枢是正常导体，称半超导电机。此外，也有直流和交流超导电机之分。对直流超导电机，由于超导电流几乎无能耗，一些超导材料所制的励磁线圈产生的磁场可在5万高斯以上，电机输出功率可大为增高，且重量轻，体积小，这对航空和潜水艇等的用电甚为有利。交流超导电机由于有交流损耗，尚需附加低温冷却器设置，但日本7万千瓦级的超导发电样机的实用化试验已取得成功。
