上体具黑色和黄色的横斑；腰和下体为绿色；额和脸为黄色；颊的羽毛尖端具紫罗兰色；喉部有许多黑色的斑点;翅下覆羽绿色;尾羽绿蓝色。栖息于林缘的溪流、疏林草地、干燥灌丛和开阔的平原。通常不怕人。飞翔时从一棵树飞到另一棵树,常结群移动,声音嘈杂。除觅食外，多栖息于树上。听觉灵敏。食物主要为种子。营巢于树洞或放置于地上木头洞内。每窝产卵4～6枚。各国从澳大利亚引种，作为笼鸟观赏。
