指经济的空间结构。在经济地理学中，这一概念有时用于经济景观的研究。早期的古典经济学中，用它来描述产业区位的形成和发展，认为空间经济是经济活动复杂的空间型式，有时对应于特殊的资源和人口结构以及特殊的生产和运输技术。 对它的研究着重于投入-产出的地理分布和价格-费用的地理变化,以后马克思主义政治经济学的理论对这一定义进行了改革，认为空间经济是构成社会结构的社会经济关系存在的物质形式。另一种观点进一步把空间经济当作占支配地位的生产方式的空间表述，它的空间结构决定于生产力和生产关系。即社会生产方式决定生产布局。
空间经济是在一定的地域范围内生产力存在和发展的基本前提。地理学分析空间经济所包含的各种物质要素有规律的分布，以及表现在各个部门与地区之间相互依赖、相互制约的关系。
