法云圆通法秀禅师。秦州陇城人也。生辛氏。母梦僧臞甚须发尽白托宿曰。我麦积山僧也。觉而娠。先是麦积山有僧。亡其名。日诵法华。与应干寺鲁和上善。尝欲从之游方。鲁老之既去。绪语曰。他日当寻我竹铺坡前铁疆岭下。俄有儿生其所。鲁闻之往观焉。儿为一笑。三岁愿随鲁归。遂冒鲁氏。十九通经为大僧。天骨峻拔。轩昂万僧中。凛如画。讲大经章分句析。机锋不可触。京洛著闻。倚圭峰钞以诠量众义。然恨圭峰学禅。唯敬北京元华严。然恨元非讲。曰教尽佛意。则如元公者。不应非教。禅非佛意。则如圭峰者。不应学禅。然吾不信世尊教外以法私大迦叶。乃罢讲南游。谓同学曰。吾将穷其窟穴。搂取其种类。抹杀之以报佛恩乃已耳。初至随州护国。读净果禅师碑曰。僧问报慈。如何是佛性。慈曰。谁无。又问净果。果曰。谁有。其僧因有悟。秀大笑曰。岂佛性敢有无之。矧又曰因以有悟哉。其气拂膺。去至无为铁佛。谒怀禅师。怀貌寒危坐涕垂沾裳。秀易之。怀收涕问。座主讲何经。秀曰。华严。又问。此经以何为宗。曰以心为宗。又问。心以何为宗。秀不能对。怀曰。毫厘有差天地悬隔。秀退自失。悚然乃敬服。愿留日夕受法。久之乃证。怀移池入吴。皆从之。初出世淮之四面。杖笠之外包具而已。以至栖贤蒋山长芦。众千人。有全椒长老。至登座。众目哂之。无出问者。于是秀出拜趋问。如何是法秀自己。全椒笑曰。秀铁面乃不识自己乎。秀曰。当局者迷。一众服其荷法心也。冀国大长公主。建法云寺成。有诏秀为开山第一祖。开堂日。神宗遣中使降香并磨衲。仍传圣语。表朕亲至之礼。皇弟荆王致敬座下。士大夫日夕问道。时司马光方登庸。以吾法太盛。方经营之。秀曰。相公聪明人类英杰。非因佛法不能尔。遽忘愿力乎。温公意少懈。元祐五年八月卧疾。诏医官视之医请候脉。秀仰视曰。汝何为者也。吾有疾当死耳。求治之。是以生为可恋也。平生生死梦三者无所拣择。挥去之。呼侍者更衣。安坐说偈而化。阅世六十四。坐夏四十五
