在分色片制成以后、正式制版印刷之前，检查分色效果是否符合原稿的装置。传统的方法是用打样机在纸上打样，根据打样的效果确定是否对分色片再进行修正。这种方法消耗人工、材料，也费时间。20世纪80年代初，利用电视原理，在荧光屏上检视分色效果的装置已经出现和使用。这种装置可分 2种类型。一种是在分色片制成后，用摄像机将分色片分别摄入，再在荧光屏上组合显示出彩色图像以检视分色效果。另一种是用彩色摄像机对原稿扫描摄像，摄得的信号通过与电子分色机相同的校正电路后输入彩色显示装置显像，借调整旋钮求得最满意状态。然后将原稿移到分色机的原稿滚筒上并接通转换开关，分色机就可以按照显示装置上已调整好的校正数据来进行扫描制作分色片。在个别的分色机上也可附有彩色显示装置作为分色时的参考。
应用彩色显示装置，尤其是后一种装置能减少打样次数，在分色以前看到分色效果，简化操作，减少盲目性。
初期的彩色显示装置只能模拟打样或印刷效果，还不能配合不同的油墨、纸张得到与打样或印刷完全相同的效果，尚在继续改善中。
