南澳,位于闽粤之交、台湾海峡喇叭口西南端,是中国有名的“风柜”。经实测，南澳风场年平均风速每秒8.54米,年有效风速时数超过7千小时,风况属世界最佳之列。开发风能发电场的条件非常优越。1989年，有关工程人员开始在南澳开发高山风能电场，首期安装3台瑞典风力发电机。到1998年，已有风力发电机111台,总装机容量4万多千瓦,成为世界开发风能资源重点示范区。在海拔四多百米的高峰上，可以看到巍峨的大王山、松岭山、竹笠山、葫芦山上,耸立着一根又一根白色的巨柱,片片巨大的风轮叶随风旋转,蔚为奇观。
