学院是全军炮兵高等学府，创建于1944年秋，她的前身是我军第一所炮兵学校－－延安炮兵学校。半个世纪以来，
学院一直受到党中央、中央军委的高度重视和亲切关怀。陈云、李富春、贺龙、陈毅、罗荣恒、徐向前、聂荣臻等老一辈无产阶级革命家先后来院视察。朱德总司令亲自为院刊题写《炮学杂志》刊名，徐向前元帅为学院题写了院名和"延安精神育英才"的题词。
