双星子星表面上的、或绕子星旋转的气盘上的局部高温发光区。双星中热斑的形成，一般认为是来自伴星的气流撞击恒星大气层或气盘的结果。具有热斑的恒星的光变曲线会周期性地出现驼峰;而且在驼峰出现时,光变曲线上迭加有不规则的、时间尺度约几十秒钟的起伏，通常叫作闪变(flickering)。由于气盘不透明，只有当热斑朝向观测者时才能看到，所以驼峰出现的周期和双星轨道周期相同。观测表明，凡光变曲线上有驼峰出现的食双星，其周期均有变化；热斑是由其子星间的气流活动引起的。
