      三国时期蜀国将领。字孟起,扶风茂陵(今陕西兴平东北)人。父马腾与韩遂等于汉灵帝时起兵割据凉州。后因内部矛盾,马腾复归汉,至京师任卫尉,马超因领其众,为偏将军,甚得羌、胡等族人心。建安十六年(211)曹操西征关陇,马超与韩遂等关中割据势力屯据潼关,联合抵抗,曹操施离间计,致使马、韩相互猜疑,遂一举击败。马超率羌、胡退出关中,转战陇上攻陷冀城,杀凉州刺史,并其众,自称征西将军,督凉州军事。不久原刺史故吏杨阜起兵讨伐,杀其妻子,马超投奔汉中,依其地割据势力张鲁,不得志。建安十九年,归刘备。时刘璋被刘备围于成都,马超率军抵城下,城中震怖,加速了刘璋覆败。诸葛亮赞他文武全才,勇猛过人。建安二十二年,刘备率军进攻汉中,马超从征。二十四年,刘备为汉中王,拜马超为左将军,假节;章武元年(221),迁骠骑将军,领凉州牧。次年卒。
