空空导弹有效的发射区域，又称可攻击区。在此区域内发射导弹有可能命中目标，而在此区域外发射导弹则一般不能命中目标。攻击区有空间的、铅垂面的和水平面的，常用的是水平面攻击区。攻击区是评价导弹战术技术性能优劣的一个重要指标，从导弹初步设计到投入使用的各研制阶段，分别绘出估算攻击区、理论攻击区和战斗使用攻击区。攻击区的绘制以目标为原点，相对于目标绘出近边界、远边界和侧边界，形成一个封闭的区域图。图中 为近边界，为远边界，为侧边界，M点为目标位置。攻击区的边界和导弹飞行性能、制导系统、导引方法(见导弹导引弹道)、引信和战斗部特性、载机飞行性能、发射方式和目标特性等因素有关。对于研制完成的导弹，须按不同的作战高度、载机速度、目标速度和机动情况分别绘出相应的攻击区，供作战使用。
