中国僧人。俗姓李，幼名文涛，又名广平，字叔同，别号息霜,法名演音,别号晚晴老人。原籍浙江平湖，生于天津。早年就学上海南洋公学，从蔡元培受业。擅长书画、篆刻、工诗词。1905年留学日本，入东京美术学校从黑田清辉学西洋画，旁及音乐、戏曲，造诣甚深。1907年，他与曾孝谷等创"春柳社"于东京，主演"茶花女"，又主编《音乐小杂志》。1910年回国，初任上海《太平洋报画报》编辑，加入柳亚子发起的南社。继至杭州任浙江省立第一师范图画和音乐教师。1918年舍俗出家于杭州虎跑定慧寺，同年受戒于灵隐寺。常往来于嘉兴、上海、温州等地,并闭关著述。1928年入闽,常居厦门南普陀及泉州承天、开元等寺。弘扬南山戒律，曾创设"南山律学院"，并提出念佛不忘救国，救国不忘念佛的主张。卒于泉州温陵养老院。后人为了纪念他，在泉州清源山和杭州虎跑寺分别建塔和设纪念堂。主要著作有《四分律比丘戒相表记》、《南山律在家备览要略》及《佛学丛刊》、《护生画集》等。音乐作品有《中文名歌五十曲》、《李叔同所作歌曲》、《三宝歌》、《清凉歌》等。
