   反映物质宏观性质的数学模型。又称本构方程。归纳宏观实验结果,建立有关物质的本构关系是连续介质力学和流变学的重要研究课题。最熟知的本构关系有胡克定律、牛顿粘性定律(见粘度)、理想气体状态方程、热传导方程等。
    建立本构关系时,为保证理论的正确性,须遵循一定的公理 ,即所谓本构公理 。例如纯力学物质的本构公理有三:确定性公理(物体中的物质点在时刻t的应力状态由物体中各物质点的运动历史唯一确定)、局部作用公理(物体中的物质点的应力状态与离开该物质点有限距离的其他物质点的运动无关)和客观性公理(物质的力学性质与观察者无关)。若考虑更复杂的情况,本构公理的数目就相应增多。求解连续介质动力学初边值问题,本构关系是不可少的;否则就无法把握所研究连续介质的特殊性,在数学上表现为控制方程不封闭,其解不能唯一确定。建立物质的本构关系是流变学的重要任务,可通过实验方法、连续介质力学方法和统计力学的有机结合来完成。然而,尚未找到一个普适的本构关系,需根据研究对象和流动形态选用合适的本构关系。理性力学除对本构关系进行极为一般的研究外,还对弹性物质、粘性物质、塑性物质、粘弹性物质、粘塑性物质、弹塑性物质以及热和力耦合、电磁和力耦合、热和力以及电磁耦合等物质的本构关系进行具体研究。
