The application of the reliability theory to design of hydraulic steel gates in China is summarized and evaluated systemically from aspects of statistical analysis of loads and resistances,reliability calculation,calibration of the hydraulic steel gate design specification,determination of the expression for reliability design and the partical coefficient,etc.

Compared with measured discharges, the discharge flows calculated by formula one (listed in "design specification of water gates") are over-predictions, while the calculated values by formula two are normally under-predictions.

The paper points out that the“ Criterion" for type selection of lock filling＆ emptying system presented in the“ Shiplock Design Code" concerning the criterion for selection of filling＆ emptying system (revised version) are rational and in conformity with the practice of China.
