它是按一定的条件修改圆柱投影而得。该投影的纬线是一组平行的直线，两极则表现为点或线的形式；其经线，除中央经线为一直线外，其余经线均为对称于中央经线的曲线。由于经纬线不是垂直相交，因此不存在等角投影，常用的以等积伪圆柱投影为多。该投影主要用于绘制世界图、大洋图和分洲图。该投影又称“拟圆柱投影”。
