三层楼位于武昌城区的北部，泛指和平大道与新河街交汇的地带。这一带原是一片水塘荒地。清末，新河洲渐有居民，逐步形成武昌城外的集市贸易场所。1912年，从事营造业的资本家喻兴隆在今和平大道445号处修建了一栋砖木结构的三层楼房，底层开杂货锦、棺材铺，二楼开茶馆，三楼为说书场和皮影戏场，生意兴隆，远近闻名。这座三层楼房高踞于四周平房草棚之上，非常突出，成为这一带的显著标志，人们遂以三层楼泛指这一地区。解放后扩建和平大道时，原楼已经拆除，但三层楼仍为这一带的区片名称。由武昌至红钢城的16路公共汽车在此设三层楼站。附近有条小街，至今仍叫三层楼街。
