国内分布于台湾、广东、海南岛及西沙群岛;国外分布在非洲沿岸、澳大利亚、新西兰、菲律宾及日本等。
中型个体，贝壳纺锤形，壳高98毫米，壳宽51毫米。螺旋部较长，螺层约12层，肩部圆钝，体螺层上端宽大，前部渐瘦，基部骤然趋窄;贝壳表面无滑，具黄褐色、大小不等的鳞状花纹。体螺层上面通常具2、3条宽褐色环带。厣角质，呈卵圆形，生长纹粗糙。
暖水种，生活在沿海低潮线附近或岩石、珊瑚礁间，退潮后多隐藏在石块下面及珊瑚礁洞内，黄昏后活跃，常在栖息地附近觅食。春、夏季节为繁殖期，卵囊袋状，常附着在岩石上、每个雌体一次的产卵囊数为10-100余个。口里具毒齿，其毒性较强，捕捉时应十分注意。
贝壳美丽，可做观赏品。
