与辫状河不同之处在于它的汊河数目较少,流路较为稳定,由长期出露的沙岛隔开。这种河型在长江中、下游普遍出现。所以有人把它列为单独的类型。在长江上,分汊之间的沙岛称为江心洲。江心洲的雏形是水下淤积的浅滩。如果有某个浅滩逐渐稳定和堆高,就有可能在枯水期不被淹没,出露为心滩,将水流分向它的两侧,形成两股汊道。两股汊道逐步被拓宽,变弯,其中的环状流就会进一步将心滩加大加高。经过几次大洪水以后,心滩被堆高到超出乎滩水位,生长植物,进一步稳定,就成为江心洲。有的江心洲上还有人定居开垦。长江上的江心洲不胜枚举,南京北面的八卦洲就是一个好例子。

江心洲多半形成在长江节点的上下游。所谓节点就是两岸有基岩高地夹持、水狭流急的地方。节点上游壅水,下游河道突然放宽,都是容易落淤的地方。江心洲为什么特别出现在长江中下游呢?这与该区段的地质构造和河岸物质组成有关。因为从地质构造上看,这段长江上基岩隆起与凹陷交替出现;从河岸物质看,这段黏土成分不多,所以易受冲蚀而展宽。
