The main reason causing sediment deposition on the water way in the Qiantang Estuary is the flocculation of large amounts of cohesive fine grain sediment from the river and that from the sea,induced by strong electrolyte sea water at the border of sea water and fresh water,and the rapid settling of flocs.
钱塘江口河口上游河流和海域来沙多为细颗粒泥沙,粘性细颗粒泥沙由于其特殊的表面电化学性质遇到强电解质海水而产生絮凝沉降,是形成河口淤积的原因之一。

钱塘江涌潮

    发生在中国杭州湾钱塘江口的潮水暴涨的现象。状似直立的水墙,滚滚而来。钱塘江河口的潮差很大,河口呈宽阔的漏斗状且河床平缓,致使太平洋的潮波传播到这一带时,潮差剧增。传入杭州湾的潮波,在钱塘江河口同河流相遇,波面受到较大的阻力,波峰前沿出现破碎现象,又遇水下沙坝,使涌潮分成东湖和南湖两支,继续向河口推进。在尖山和海宁之间,有时能激起10多米高的水柱。破碎的潮峰呈滚滚白浪,高1~2米,以4~6米/秒的速度传播,潮位在短时间内涨达2米以上。每年临近秋分时节 ,恰逢大潮,又正值雨季,平均海平面升高,在海宁的潮差可高达9米,涌潮的现象异常突出。若遇强劲的东风或东南风,涌潮景象更加壮观。
