白芨滩自然保护区位于宁夏回族自治区灵武市境内，地理坐标为东经106°23’-106°48’，北纬37°54’-8°22’，总面积81800公顷。保护区于1985年经原灵武县人民政府批准建立，1986年晋升为自治区级，是一个以荒漠生态系统为主要保护对象的自然保护区。
本区地处鄂尔多斯台地的西南隅，南接黄土生陵区，地貌属于丘陵地带，分为低山丘陵、缓坡丘陵和沙漠低山丘陵，海拔高度1150-1650米之间。区内荒漠植被保存良好，尤其是中部核心区内分布的以柠条为主的1.7万公顷天然荒漠灌木群落是国内面积最大最集中的特有类型，北部核心区内2万公顷以猫头刺为主的天然荒漠草原群落也是国内已建保护区中最大的一处。区内已知高等植物有49科149属262种；已知脊椎动物有22目45科115种，其中列为国家重点保护的野生动物有黑鹳、荒漠猫、兔狲、鹅喉羚、鸢等22种。本区北界距银川市不到10公里，西界距黄河5枣10公里，特殊的地理位置起着特殊的不可替代的作用，对银川市的生态环境的改善和减少北部沙漠对黄河的影响起着极为重要的作用。另一方面，保护区内荒漠景观独特，并分布有距今3枣4万年的水洞沟古人类文化遗址、宋代建筑马鞍山甘露寺、明代古长城等名胜古迹，对开展生态旅游也具有重要意义。
