概 述
5.56mm双弹头步枪弹并不是美国柯尔特制造公司首创。美国早在１９６４年正式定型的ｍ１９８式7.62mm枪弹就是采用双弹头结构，它是温彻斯特公司设计的，旨在提高武器的命中率。该弹是美制7.62mm北约制式枪弹的一个型号弹种，已为美陆军采用。
5.56mm双头弹是柯尔特公司为参加陆军先进战斗步枪选型而研制的。其结构设计与ｍ１９８式7.62mm双头弹相似，只是口径减小。尽管最终在选型中被淘汰，但双头弹步枪系统却是先进战斗步枪选型试验中最具竞争力的方案。
结构特点
5.56mm双弹头步枪弹的两个弹头头尾相接、串联排列在一起，弹头为钢心，两弹头均为尖头平底，底部有凹窝。
