在水电站枢纽布置中，厂房放在大坝的下游侧地面（一般是紧靠大坝）的水电站。又称溢流式厂房水电站。这种电站的主要优点是大坝和厂房各成自己的建筑物体系,相对来说结构较为简单,施工时厂房与大坝的相互干扰也少。因为厂房靠近大坝，这样可使设在坝内的引水发电钢管长度缩短。但坝后水电站在布置上也有受到限制的一面。它一般较适用于混凝土坝。对于土石坝，因发电引水管道穿过坝体，万一管道漏水，将危及土石坝的安全和整个电站的安全。另外，对于泄洪量大和河床不宽的坝址，由于需要设置溢洪道而占有坝后地面位置，坝后式厂房也不好布置。如果大坝很高，则溢流可从厂房顶上通过。这种形式为坝后式厂顶过流布置。中国坝后式厂房建成不少，如刘家峡主河槽的地面厂房和盐锅峡、八盘峡、三门峡等水电站。坝后水电站的厂顶过流布置也有不同的形式。如新安江水电站为坝后式厂顶溢流布置，乌江渡水电站为坝后式厂顶排流布置。（见彩图）
