一般贫困的大学生用以维持生计的手段，他们利用业余时间做工赚取报酬。当然也有人并不是为了报酬，而是想多点社会实践经验。调查发现，当今大学生参加勤工俭学的目的如下：（1）有的主要是为了钱（占47%），但为钱的动机却不一，他们或是由于家庭经济困难而想减轻家庭负担，或是想过得潇洒一点，或是想弥补自己的“财政赤字”等等。（2）有的主要是为了培养能力，认识社会，增加自己的人生阅历，锻炼自己的意志，体验自立，而“钱 ”是次要的（29%）。被调查者坦诚直言：“勤工俭学使我们早日接触社会，开拓了视野，长了知识，锻炼了能力”，“如果勤工俭学仅仅是为了钱是没有意义的”，“流自己的汗，吃自己的饭”。学生一般认为，参加勤工俭学不论是有意识的还是无意识的，都能得到能力的锻炼，但对于具体能够锻炼哪些能力则认识不一。（3）其他目的。有的是为了资助贫困学生或患病者，有人把它看作是丰富课余生活、调节“无聊”生活的一剂良药等等，不一而足。“挣钱”、“早日接触社会、认识社会”和“锻炼能力”是大学生参加勤工俭学的主要目的。
