意大利剧作家。1544年 3月11日出生在索伦托城。曾在大学攻读法律，并钻研古典文化，结识许多人文主义学者。1565～1572年，在费拉拉城埃斯特公爵手下当宫廷诗人。这期间，他为宫廷演出编写剧本。写过一部未完成的喜剧，一部模仿索福克勒斯悲剧的《托里斯蒙多国王》（1573～1586），但未引起注意。他的田园剧《阿明达》(1597)描写牧人阿明达爱慕山林水泽女神西尔维亚的故事。爱情遭到拒绝后，阿明达误信西尔维亚死亡的消息，悲痛欲绝，跳崖自杀，西尔维亚深受感动，在他遇救以后，欣然与他结为夫妻。这出田园剧分 5幕，虽然遵循时间、地点一致律，但在典型的悲剧模式中注进了新的内容，着重歌颂爱情、青春与欢乐，肯定人的本性，赞美自然和牧人纯朴高尚的品格。剧本情节跌宕起伏，语言凝炼优雅，洋溢着人文主义思想，标志着文艺复兴戏剧向巴罗克戏剧的过渡。1573年该剧演出，获得很大成功。塔索晚年因受教会迫害抑郁成疾，1595年4月25日在罗马逝世。
