| 光纤通信 optical fibre cable communication 通过光学纤维传输信息的现代通信的主体传输技术。在发信端，信息被转换和处理成便于传输的电信号，电信号控制光源，使它发出满足传输要求的光信号，从而实现信号的电-光转换。发信端发出的光信号通过光纤传输到远方的收信端，经光电二极管转换成电信号，从而实现信号的光-电转换。电信号再经过处理和转换而恢复为与原发信端相同的信息。它的最大特点是具有极宽的通过频带，可以同时容纳数十万路电话信号或数百路电视信号，传输能力比数字微波通信高几个数量级。光纤通信的其他优点还包括：特别适合于传输数字信息，不受电磁干扰（包括核爆炸产生的核辐射干扰）的影响，光纤的材料来源丰富，价格低廉，可以节省大量的金属材料，等等。随着社会信息化进程的不断深化，通信可视化的要求不断高涨，包含彩色电视和高清晰度电视在内的宽带多媒体通信日益成为必不可少的业务。在这种需求的牵引下，光纤通信将不可避免地成为国家通信网的骨干传输体系；它们与宽带综合交换系统一起，将成为宽带综合业务数字网的基本结构。
