分子筛是一种复杂的硅铝酸物晶体，其通式为`[xM_{2/n}*Al_2O_3*ySiO_2]*mH_2O`，其中M为碱金属离子，n是它的价数。在加热的同时抽空脱去结晶水后，晶体的物理结构没有变化，结果成为具有很大内表面的蜂窝状结构。其表面积一般在600m2g-1左右，它被液氮冷却到液氮温度时就大量的吸气，产生抽气的效果，可作为其他高真空泵的前级泵，能获得洁净的真空。
