   电流对磁体的作用。1820年7月丹麦物理学家H.C.奥斯特首次发现 ,在载流直导线附近平行放置的磁针受力偏转。这效应把以前一直认为彼此无关的电现象和磁现象联系了起来,宣告了电磁学的诞生。值得注意的还在于,磁针是在垂直于电流的方向上偏转。换句话说,磁针两端磁性集中的磁极(北极和南极)受到的作用力的方向相反,但都垂直于磁极与电流构成的平面。这在当时是一种新的基本作用力——横向力。它与已知的非接触物体之间的引力、电力不同,引力、电力是把物体推开、拉近(排斥、吸引)的有心力。奥斯特实验突破了只存在有心力的概念,拓宽了作用力的类型。
   同年稍后 J.-B.毕奥和F.萨伐尔通过实验揭示了电流磁效应的定量规律,建立了毕奥-萨伐尔-拉普拉斯定律。在奥斯特实验和其他一系列实验的启发下,安培提出磁现象的本质是电流物质的磁性来源于分子电流的看法,并建立了电流元相互作用的安培定律。以后,M.法拉第不仅发现了电流磁效应的逆效应即电磁感应现象,而且对电磁作用提出了近距作用的解释,认为客观存在的力线和场是电磁作用的媒递物。所有这些最终导致麦克斯韦电磁场理论的建立。
