大黑山自然保护区位于内蒙古赤峰市敖汉旗东南，燕山山脉努鲁尔虎山中东部，有大小山头近百座，海拔高度在600－1074米，山高岭峻，沟谷纵横，气势雄伟，森林茂密，树木种类达600余种，占地近30平方公里，以观赏森林景观、奇峰异石为主。
大黑山自然保护区地处西辽河干流的教来河水系与大凌河水系的分水岭地带，是科尔沁沙地南侵的天然生态屏障，是内蒙高原与松辽平原毗邻的自然环境转换带，更是环境演化的敏感区，也是华北、东北、蒙新动物区系的过渡地带。是一个以保护草原、森林、湿地等多样生态系统及珍稀野生动植物和西辽河水源涵养、水土保持为主要对象的丘陵山区综合性自然保护区。该保护区生物资源多样，具有很强的典型性、代表性、特有性及脆弱性，在全国生物多样性保护方面占有重要地位。
保护区境内有草原、森林、湿地等多样的生态系统。草原有：干草原类的大针茅草原，有草甸草原的贝加尔针茅草原，丛生禾草草甸草原，线叶菊草原；湿地有河漫滩湿地和水库；森林生态系统为暖温带夏绿阔叶林，阴坡地带为蒙古栎林、黑桦林，阳坡地带为大果榆林、小叶朴林、西伯利亚杏灌丛、丁香灌丛、榛灌丛等，特别指出的是在十八盘核心区保存下了一片原生状态的东亚夏绿阔叶林。
保护区优越的自然条件，得以保存了丰富的物种资源。保护区境内有野生维管束植物82科301属592余种，其中：国家重点保护植物3种，国家重点保护药用植物7种，在大黑山保存有小叶朴、大果榆，胡桃楸等为群种的古老残遗植物群落。保护区境内动物资源十分丰富，初步查明有鸟类16目41科142种，其中黄爪隼为世界受胁种，国家一级保护鸟类有一种（金雕），国家二级保护鸟类有红脚隼、黄爪隼、草原雕等21种。有哺乳动物29种，其中在四道营子大山核心区分布有30～40只野生黄羊种群。
