   亚洲中部的大咸水湖。旧称阿拉海。南半部属乌兹别克斯坦,北半部属哈萨克斯坦。南北最长428千米,东西最宽235千米,面积6.4万平方千米。湖面海拔52米,水深大部分不足25米,最深处67米,盐度10~14。有岛屿313个,大岛多集中于南半部,其中较大的有复活岛、巴尔萨克尔梅斯岛、拉扎列夫岛等,面积共2345平方千米。湖岸南侧较平直,北岸多湖湾,其中较大湖湾有图希巴斯湾、舍甫琴柯湾、萨雷希加纳克湾等。阿姆河和锡尔河分别自南北岸注入湖中  ,在河口均形成三角洲。20世纪50年代起,两河沿岸灌溉农业高速发展,大量的灌溉用水使河水中途骤耗,咸海水位明显下降,40年来水位已下降15米以上,蓄水量减少近2/3,目前几乎无河流入咸海,湖面已缩小为4.1万平方千米。大面积的沙漠逐渐向湖边缩聚,沿岸局部的海洋性气候也逐渐向大陆性气候转化。咸海湖水年均蒸发量远远大于1000毫米,水中盐度急剧增高,鱼类资源已大量减少,优良的湖港也有被沙漠吞没的危险。现主要港口为阿拉尔斯克、穆伊纳克等,每年可通航7个月,冬季有冰期。
