    中国古代城市居民聚居之处。又名闾里、坊。里的平面一般呈方形或矩形,围以墙,设里门出入,里内排列居民住宅。里原为农村的聚居形式,后移入城市。里坊制城市始于春秋战国时期,盛于西汉至唐代。西汉长安城有160闾里,分布在城北及长乐宫、未央宫之间。北魏景明二年(501),洛阳城筑里323个,每里300步见方。隋唐改称城内里为坊。隋唐长安城有110坊,坊内辟十字街或横街,布置巷曲。北宋以后,陆续拆除城墙,封闭式的里坊制至此结束。
