刚体内任一直线在运动过程中始终同原来位置保持平行的运动，又称移动或平行移动。例如，在平直轨道上运行的火车车厢上任一直线,在火车运行过程中,始终同它原来的位置保持平行。平动刚体内所有各点在每一瞬时都具有大小相等、方向平行的速度和加速度，各点的运动轨迹也完全相同，互相平行。图中A1B1∥A2B2∥A3B3。
