【来源】
为大戟科植物山乌桕的根。
【植物形态】
山乌桕，又名：红乌桕。 乔木或灌木，高3～5米。枝条灰黑色，具小点状皮孔。单叶互生；纸质；椭圆状卵形，长3～10厘米，宽2～5厘米，先端短尖或钝，基部钝形，全缘，上面绿色，下面粉绿色；叶柄长2～7.5厘米，顶端有2腺体。花单性，雌雄同株；总状花序顶生，密生黄色小花；雌雄花同在一花序上，但有时仅具雄花，无花瓣及花盘；雄花7朵聚生于苞腋内，苞片卵形，先端锐尖，每侧各有腺体1，萼杯状；雄蕊2，很少有3枚者；雌花生于花序的近基部，萼3，三角形，子房卵形，3室，柱头3裂，向外反卷。蒴果室背开裂；种子近球形，外被蜡层。花期4～6月。果期7～8月。 生于平原、丘陵、山地的疏林或灌丛中。分布广东、广西、福建、台湾、云南、贵州、湖南、江西、浙江等地。 本植物的叶(山乌桕叶)亦供药用，另详专条。

【性味】
《陆川本草》："苦，寒，有微毒。"
【功用主治】
利水通便，去瘀消肿。治大便秘结，白浊，跌打损伤，蛇咬伤，痔疮，皮肤湿痒。 ①《陆川本草》："去瘀，消肿，通便，清肠胃。治跌打损伤，大便热结，毒蛇咬伤。" ②《广西民间常用草药》："治蛇伤，疮痈，皮肤湿痒，理跌打。"
【用法与用量】
内服：煎汤，1～2钱(鲜者1～2两)；或捣汁饮。外用：捣敷或煎汤洗。
【选方】
①治大便秘结：山乌桕根一两。用水煎服。 ②治白浊：山乌桕根须一两，猪肉二两。用水煎服。 ③治蛇咬伤：山乌桕根一两，枫木叶二两。共捣烂，用糯米水四两，调匀，取汁服。渣敷患处四周。 ④治毒蛇咬伤：山乌桕一至二两，黑面叶一至二两。用水煎，冲酒服。 ⑤治痔疮及皮肤湿痒：山乌桕根、铺地粘、金银花各适量。用水煎洗患处。(选方出《广西民间常用草药》)
