中国话剧演员、木刻家。生于1919年6月27日,山东潍县人。1935年进北平艺文中学学习。自幼喜好绘画，善歌唱，工木刻。1936年 7月因创作巨幅木刻《抬棺游行》和参加联合美展，遭反动当局通缉，离平南下，考入南京国立戏剧专科学校,攻舞美设计,并随余上沅、曹禺、马彦祥学戏剧表演。抗日战争爆发后,随校内迁,参加演剧活动，并与刘岘共同创作《抗战版画》。1938年组织中华全国木刻界抗敌协会成都分会，任理事。1939年冬赴延安入马列学院学习。在校期间，曾在德国名剧《马门教授》中扮演马门洛克医生。之后调鲁迅艺术文学院任教。1943年春与李波共同创作演出《拥军花鼓》，并在秧歌剧《兄妹开荒》的创作与演出中塑造了边区农民的生动形象，轰动延安。他还参加创作并主演《赵富贵自新》、《张丕模除奸》、《二流子变英雄》和多幕剧《周子山》,撰写了《从兄妹开荒的演出谈起》、《申红友同志给我们上了第一课》等论文。1944年他参加创作歌剧《白毛女》，为首演的执行导演之一。抗战胜利后赴东北改编导演《血泪仇》等剧目。1946年12月赴黑龙江省讷河县搜集创作材料时坠车牺牲。
