由频敏变阻器和其他控制电器组成的起动器。主要用于大中容量的交流绕线式感应电动机的起动。由于频敏变阻器的阻抗是随电动机的转速而平滑地自动改变，故起动过程平稳，无起动电流和起动转矩的冲击，控制线路也很简单。在频敏起动器中，频敏变阻器接在电动机转子绕组电路中（见图），当接触器接通电源后，电动机便开始起动。由于起动时电动机转子的旋转速度是由零逐渐增大，而频敏变阻器的阻抗则由一较大值逐渐减小，故起动电流开始也被限制于一较小的数值，并逐渐增大。随着电动机起动过程的结束，其转子的转速升高到额定值，这时，频敏变阻器的阻抗已自动地减到很小的数值，这对电动机的正常运行没有多大影响。但有时也用开关手动或自动地将频敏变阻器短接掉。
