按照休克尔分子轨道法(HMO)，每个π电子用一个π分子轨道来描写，各个参与共轭的原子轨道的线性组合为：
式中φμ为第μ个原子上的原子轨道；cμi为组合系数。对于不同的原子,组合系数一般是不相同的,也就是说，在这个分子轨道上的一个 π电子并不是均匀地分布到各个原子上的,而是在有的原子上密度大些,有的则小些；按照HMO法，电荷密度分布的大小正比于c嵢。在第μ个原子上，总的π电子电荷密度分布等于所有π分子轨道上的π电子在这个原子上的电荷密度分布之和：
式中ni为第i个分子轨道上的π电子数，即占据数，各个qμ就代表 π电子在各个原子上的电荷密度分布。电荷分布这个概念已推广到其他更精密的分子轨道法。
