Ice radar\'s technical development in polar ice sheets investigation was reviewed through three periods;the early ice radar systems(1960s—1980s),the second generation ice radar systems(1980s—2000) and the newest ice radar systems(after 2000).

在南极大陆上覆盖着巨厚的冰盖，它的面积达1398万平方千米，最厚的地方4200为米。南极冰盖的总体积多达2450立方千米，如果全部融化，全球洋面将升高60米，地球上的陆地面积将因此而缩小2000万平方千米。这将会给世界上人口相对稠密的低海拔地区造成巨大灾难。
